My sister, sweetheart, and I are planning on seeing the new Star Trek movie tonight at the local cinema. As always, I feel the same keyed-up energy that I feel before I depart on an airplane flight. Somewhere back in my early childhood, my psyche confused the anticipation of seeing a movie and air travel departure into one feeling. They've evoked the same reaction ever since. It's part of the reason why I don't go to the movies often.
I also don't go often because it's hard for me to sit through an entire movie unless I am really, really, really interested in the plot. For instance, the last movie I saw in the theatre was the third Pirates of the Caribbean flick, two summers ago. Even that had me squirming at about the two-thirds mark.
Most other movies I wait to come out on disc before I view them, and often do so alone, as I'll pause them to get up and fidget before sitting back down again to view the rest. My ADHD doesn't express in the classroom anymore, but cinemas drive me batty. At least with live theatre it's interactive and they allow for intermissions.
No soda for me, but I'll get some "fidget food" before I go in, preferably tiny candy that requires a lot of hand coordination to eat.

Hee hee. You sound like me. I love movies, but I'm also a multitasker chronically, so I can't just sit and watch a movie, I need to get things done. I also get distracted by other people's voices and talking and then I get mad. One time, hubby slid down in his seat during the debut of "Aliens" when I stood up and turned to the people behind us who were talking about how they should have stayed home and rented a movie, "Well, why don't you just do that, go home and talk through a movie!" I didn't realize at the time they were like a row of gangbangers. Yikes! They did shut up, though. I think I shocked them into shame. Hee hee. Yup, I love to wait till it comes out on disk and then play it while I fold laundry, work on editing my novel on the laptop, or read a book. The only time I really curl up and watch the entire thing is scary movie night at home. Then, I can curl up and give it my full attention. Hope "Star Trek" is good. I suspect it will be. I love JJ Abrams. He's awesome and the concept is a cool one!
ReplyDeleteIt was an awesome movie! I think it'll be one of those few where I can watch it straight through without the extra need to fidget; there are a lot of gleeful jump-and-flinch moments.
ReplyDeleteI was leery of going to the theatre here. The people in this town are notorious theatre talkers. Once I had to tell a farmer and his wife three separate times to stop talking and they glared at me every time and talked about how impetrinent I was and that a "young lady" should know her place. The last time they talked I turned around, kneeled in my seat, and stared at them with my chin in my hands until they stopped talking and looked at me. I said that their conversation must be much more fascinating than the movie, if they were talking all the way through it. (Unfortunately this was probably true.) Staring at them did the trick! They moved three rows back and didn't speak again. The people behind their original seats gave me a grin and a thumbs up. Apparently they'd been trying to get them to shut up too.
You deserve a kudos for taking on gang-bang brats! Most of them are just a lot of hot air and talk; if confronted with real ire they tend to back down, especially if it's from a "normal" adult. Brava!
